Swedish thriller in Dithmarschen: suspense until the very last minute, then big cheers! On January 22, 2024, the Northvolt Drei battery factory received the final go-ahead it needed from Norderwöhrden to build on the Energieküste. 4:3 - the result of the vote was close, as expected, but the majority was enough. The decision of the siting community not only caused great expectation in the Heide region and Schleswig-Holstein, but the whole of Germany and even the responsible EU committee kept a curious eye on the village of 260 inhabitants.
News from Norderwöhrden: In addition to numerous media representatives, the movers and shakers involved also gathered at Gasthof Oldenwörden in the evening to find out the result of the municipal representatives' vote on the spot.

More juice for the green drive
Northvolt committed on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, and signed the implementation agreement for the construction of the battery factory with the municipalities of Lohe-Rickelshof and Norderwöhrden, Heide region. The construction of Northvolt Drei is a great moment for the Energieküste in terms of climate neutrality. The renewable electricity from Energieküste, the greenest energy grid in Germany, makes Northvolt's vision of "the world's greenest batteries" a reality. This is because the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein is bursting with surplus green energy from wind, photovoltaics and biomass. Ideal conditions to power Northvolt Drei and produce batteries with the lowest CO2 footprint in continental Europe.

One goal remains firmly in sight: To make the world a cleaner, better place. The Northvolt Drei plant in Heide will produce the world's most environmentally friendly lithium-ion batteries in the future. Every year, these will supply up to one million electric vehicles and make a decisive contribution to making the transport sector climate-neutral.
Lots of new "Energieküstler:innen"
The establishment of Northvolt Drei offers huge opportunities for the entire region - it also provides a fresh breeze on the labor market. Not only will 3,000 people be employed in the gigafactory in Heide, thousands more will be needed in the surrounding industry and service sector. The districts of Dithmarschen, Nordfriesland, Pinneberg and Steinburg are already planning to build 9,300* new homes for the up to 12,000 additional employees predicted by 2029.
It is great news that it is now clear that Northvolt wants to produce the greenest car battery in the world here in Schleswig-Holstein.

Our future is renewable
Since the beginning of November, digging has been going on at the Northvolt site in the Dithmarschen district. Production is due to start in 2026. Full expansion of the plant is planned for 2029.
The green future starts here and now and the Energieküste is proud to be part of something really BIG!
