LanWin3: CONNECTIONS FOR THE ENERGY TRANSITION
Grid connection for offshore wind farm in the North Sea
50Hertz operates the electricity transmission grid in northern and eastern Germany and is expanding it for the energy transition. By 2032, 50Hertz intends to safely integrate 100% renewable energy into the grid and system.

We need to speed up grid expansion in Germany. If we generate electricity in a more decentralised way, if we generate more electricity offshore, it must also be transported to where it is needed.
LanWin3 - from the North Sea to Heide
50Hertz's first North Sea offshore project: The LanWin3 offshore grid connection will link a wind farm in the North Sea to the mainland. The wind farm area is located around 120 kilometres northwest of Helgoland within the German Exclusive Economic Zone. From there, an undersea cable runs for around 200 kilometres to the mainland near Büsum. An underground cable around 15 kilometres long will then connect the pipeline to the MultiTerminalHub Heide. Finally, the line will be routed as part of the NordOstLink and as far as Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Offshore platform with converter station included
The offshore wind farm will have a capacity of 2,000 megawatts. The connection to the electricity grid will be realised by 50Hertz as an extra-high voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) at a voltage level of 525 kilovolts. In addition to the cable connection, 50Hertz will also realise an offshore platform with a converter station in the area of the offshore wind farm. The expected completion date for the offshore grid connection system is 31st December 2032. The multi-terminal hub is being realised in cooperation with the transmission system operator TenneT, which is implementing the parallel LanWin2 grid connection system, which will also be integrated into the MultiTerminalHub Heide.
Power supply for 18 million people
The 50Hertz extra-high-voltage grid in northern and eastern Germany has a circuit length of over 10,600 kilometres - that is the distance from Berlin to Rio de Janeiro. The area includes the federal states of Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia as well as the city states of Berlin and Hamburg. In these regions, 50Hertz secures the electricity supply for 18 million people around the clock with more than 2,100 employees.
Welcome to Schleswig-Holstein
Through its activities in the expansion of offshore wind energy in the North Sea and planned large direct current connections from northern to southern Germany under partial responsibility, 50Hertz is also present in Schleswig-Holstein. In addition to the NordOstLink (50% share with TenneT), 50Hertz's largest project is the connection of five offshore wind farms in the North Sea and the SuedWestLink (DC42) (with TransnetBW), which connects Schleswig-Holstein with Baden-Württemberg.
