West CoastCampus Future Day 2026:

Energieküste Ginkgo biloba for FH Westküste

A sustainable challenge? No question about it – the Energieküste is up for the task! So, on 21st May 2026, the FH Westküste University of Applied Sciences in Heide not only inaugurated a new building, but also planted a green ‘living fossil’ from the Energieküste. The West CoastCampus Future Day lived up to its name with exciting insights into the prospects for areas such as research and knowledge transfer, study and the world of work, the energy transition and AI.

The thoroughly successful day was opened by Minister-President Daniel Günther, who inaugurated the new climate-friendly multi-purpose building. The new addition, covering a good 1,200 square metres, meets high energy standards, including a photovoltaic system on the roof, a green roof, and energy-efficient lighting and building technology. Daniel Günther praised the Energieküste’s great strength in collaboration and emphasised the central role of the FH Westküste in the areas of transformation and sustainability. With the new building, a place has been created where young people can learn, thereby securing the future of the west coast, said Thorben Schütt, District Administrator of Dithmarschen.

It is remarkable to see how committed and technically sound the work is here on the solutions of tomorrow.
District Administrator Claudius Teske, Steinburg District

Symbol of environmental protection planted

For Prof Dr Anja Wollesen, President of the FH Westküste and pioneer of the Energieküste, the event then took a sporting turn. Together with Dirk Burmeister, Director of the Heide Region Development Agency, and Thomas Bultjer, Head of the Dithmarschen Chamber of Industry and Commerce, she planted an Energieküste ginkgo tree. Many thanks! The Ginkgo biloba, named ‘Tree of the Millennium’ by the Tree Board and designated a monument to environmental protection and peace, has found a lovely spot for a long life on the ‘West Coast Campus for Sustainable Development and Transformation’.

On behalf of the Energieküste, we would like to thank GP JOULE for nominating us for this tree-planting campaign.

With that, Energieküste has mastered the #baumpflanzchallenge on Instagram! We then nominated our partners HOLCIM (Germany) GmbH, PANO Verschluss GmbH and TenneT Germany for the challenge. We’re happy to lend you the spades!

Speaking of climate protection: this autumn, the new Bachelor’s degree programme in Sustainability Management will launch at the FH Westküste. Sabrina Seeler, Professor of Sustainability Management and Transformation, is looking forward to welcoming lots of students!
