Energieküste – where energy meets long-term value creation

The North makes a strong showing in Munich! The Energieküste is the place to be for businesses committed to sustainability and keen to drive the energy transition forward. At EXPO REAL, from 5th to 7th October, an international audience of investors discovered the region’s wide-ranging advantages: premium commercial and industrial sites available for immediate development, an abundance of green energy, highly effective economic development agencies and outstanding opportunities for longterm value creation across a variety of sectors, including solar energy, battery storage and data centres.

Decarbonisation remains a key sustainability issue

The success of the energy transition is attracting attention: right from the first day, the Energieküste and its network partners welcomed numerous visitors to the Schleswig-Holstein joint stand at the International Trade Fair for Real Estate and Investment.

Among the visitors was Fabio Kirchgeßner, Managing Director of Panattoni Germany, who travelled from Hamburg. The developer of industrial and logistics sites sought information on Panattoni’s current and potential future projects in Schleswig-Holstein. Numerous international investors also expressed interest in commercial sites, particularly in connection with the Energieküste’s green energy.

German Net Zero Valleys join forces

A promising alliance: on Tuesday at the trade fair, the four German Net Zero Valleys signed a cooperation agreement and presented their joint investment offering. “Europe’s first four Net Zero Valleys: a huge opportunity for companies as part of this initiative to attract new investment and companies,” said Bodo Middeldorf, Managing Director of Zukunftsagentur Rheinisches Revier GmbH.

We know energy. We are phasing out fossil fuels.

Alongside the Rheinisches Revier, the Net Zero Valley Lausitz, the Net Zero Valley Northwest and the Net Zero Valley Schleswig-Holstein make up this forward-looking alliance. Four regions with different industrial strengths and different location profiles aim to offer a joint package for climate-neutral industry in future. The aim is to develop locations suitable for industrial investment.

Julia Carstens, State Secretary at MWVATT, said in the subsequent discussion that Schleswig-Holstein supports these European ideas. She acknowledged that achieving climate neutrality while attracting new industrial investment presents significant challenges. Electricity prices, too, remain too high. “We need to move faster,” was the shared consensus.

We are learning from one another in the practical implementation. And together, we have a strong voice when it comes to the federal government.

High demand for green energy among large-scale consumers

If you run an energy-intensive business with a commitment to sustainability, you head to the Energieküste. That’s how the numerous visits to the Schleswig-Holstein joint stand could be summarised. Highlight: State Secretary Julia Carstens visited the stand of her favourite federal state and took plenty of time to discuss the concerns and priorities of the region’s economic development agencies. Key topics included expanding grid and substation capacity, the relaxation of commercial land-use restrictions in regional planning, and further land development Julia Carstens was also presented with a planned business relocation and research project on the Blue Bioeconomy in the Reußenkögen.

The establishment of energy-intensive businesses and the necessary grid connection capacities must be coordinated at an early stage.
Julia Carstens, State Secretary at MWVATT

“The state of Schleswig-Holstein intends to take on a stronger coordinating role in this area in future and to integrate the stakeholders more closely with one another,” Julia Carstens continued.

Three days at EXPO REAL – it was amazing! And a great success for the north. Back in Munich next year!
